Special Care Dentistry is the branch of dentistry that provides oral care services for people with medical, social, psychological, or physical conditions that make it necessary to modify the normal course of dental treatment. Our desire to service the disabled community became a mission after one of our loyal patients was involved in a life-changing motor vehicle accident. After the accident, he was confined to a wheelchair and was not able able to transfer to the dental chair. Oral care is the number one unmet need for most people who are disabled, and the main obstacle is that dental facilities are not designed for the care of these individuals. We worked closely with a well-respected occupational therapist who knew of our passion to better serve the oral health needs of this population. The result is a fully accessible facility---the only one in Michigan, Our treatment rooms are uniquely designed to accommodate patients in wheel chairs and are equipped with ceiling mounted Horcher lifts. In addition, our staff has been specially trained to perform dental procedureson patients with special needs. Studies show that poor oral health is prevalent among individuals with cognitive impairment. If you or someone you know has cerebral palsy, MS, ALS, dementia, suffered a stroke, or had traumatic brain injury, such as from an auto accident, additional professional dental care is often required. The Medical Expense Provision of the Michigan Auto No Fault Law provides reimbursement for all medical expenses incurred because of their injuries. Drakeshire Dental provides education to case managers on the oral health care needs of their patients, and we are able work with most insurance companies. Case managers are welcomed and encouraged to tour our facility.
