We get it – there are plenty of people out there who don’t like going to the dentist. Maybe it’s the sound of drills or a fear of pain. Whatever the reason may be, the fear of visiting a dentist prevents many people from receiving dental care that they desperately need. That’s why Drakeshire Dental is proud to offer IV Sedation Dentistry for those with severe anxiety, those with special needs or those who want to get as much treatment covered at once as possible in a relaxed, safe environment.
What is IV Sedation and how does it work?
Intravenous Sedation refers to the administration via a thin needle of anti-anxiety medication into a vein on your hand or in your arm during your dental treatment. The medication will put you into a relaxed state that will allow your dental procedure to proceed without you even realizing it.
Once the medication is administered, the amount of sedation can be controlled by the dentist in response to each patient’s needs. You will not ‘go to sleep’ as a result of the sedation, however you will find yourself in such a relaxed state that you’ll be unaware of the dental procedure happening. You likely won’t remember things for a very brief time following the procedure, and will be in a groggy state for most of the remainder of the day. As such, you must have an escort home after undergoing sedation!
Is IV Sedation right for me?
Sedation dentistry is largely for those with extreme fear or anxiety of dental procedures or anything associated with the dental office, such as the sound of drills. It’s also effective for those with special needs, as well as those undergoing long or complex dental procedures.
Because the sedative is a medication, you’ll need to discuss and be honest with your dentist about any existing medical conditions you may have or what other medications you’re currently taking. While patients under sedation are kept under constant supervision, any steps to avoid complications will be taken, including refusing to administer sedation if an issue is likely.
